Farm Animal Stick Puppets Craft with Free Printable Patterns Post Preview: Here are directions and eight free printable patterns for farm animal stick puppets. You and your kids can use these for finger plays, songs, storytelling, and more.

There are so many fun storytelling opportunities, play, song, and nursery rhymes having to do with farms and farmyard animals. There’s Old MacDonald Had a Farm, The Farm in the Dell, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and so many more.

While it’s fun to just sing songs and recite nursery rhymes, it can add a great new aspect to these if you have some props. You could also make your own stick puppet theater!

To help you with that, I have this super cute set of farm animal stick puppets. To make these farm animal stick puppets, plus a cute red barn, I have step-by-step directions. Plus, I have a free downloadable set of eight patterns.

Your kids or students may be able to make these stick puppets independently or they may need assistance with portions of the craft. If your kids or students are younger, you may need to do some or all of the cutting. Then they can assemble the farm animal stick puppets.

Of course, if they aren’t able to do any of the work on the stick puppets, you can use the patterns to make them and they can use them for storytelling and props.

Supplies Needed for the Farm Animal Stick Puppets Craft

  • Colored cardstock (here’s a great assortment pack with 18 different colors)
  • Pencil for tracing
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Craft sticks (Popsicle sticks)
  • Black sharpie
  • Printable patterns (available for free farther down in the post)

Instructions for Farm Animal Stick Puppets

Step One:

Select colored cardstock for each animal puppet you plan to make.

Step Two:

Print out the free printable farm animal stick puppet templates available toward the end of this post.

I recommend printing them on white cardstock, if possible. That will make them easier to trace onto your colored cardstock.

Step Three:

For the directions, we’ll start with pig stick puppet craft.

Trace the pig pattern on pink cardstock from the free template. Cut out the traced pattern using scissors. You can cut out a separate pattern for the head or you can simply use the base pattern of the pig.

Step Four:

Use the craft glue to attach the eyes, nose, and inner eye patterns on the head cutout.

Optional idea: If you don’t want to cut out tons of small parts, you can just use the pig body and then draw all of the other parts on the pig. If you do this, you can skip all of the directions about gluing on various parts.

Step Five:

Attach the head cutout on the head portion of the pig base pattern.

Step Six:

Use a black sharpie or black gel pen to draw other details on the pig. However, this step is optional. You can add as many or as few details as you like.

Step Seven:

Attach the pig on a craft stick or popsicle stick to complete your pig stick puppet craft.

Step Eight:

Create all of the other farm animal stick puppets following the same directions.

Again, as mentioned above, you can draw on as many details as you want and skip out on cutting out and gluing on some of the small parts.

Step Nine:

Trace the barn pattern on cardstock. Cut out the traced pieces.

Step Ten:

Attach the barn template cut-outs together to complete the paper barn.
