My Little Book of Fall Colors Mini Book Post Preview: Work on reading, color recognition, and following directions with this free mini book made especially for fall. Kids will color pictures based on the words in this fall colors mini book.
When I taught a preschool class in our homeschool co-op as well as when I taught kindergarten in the classroom, I loved making mini books with kids. I found that kids really enjoyed having a little book that they worked on and got to keep.
Sure, it’s not like a regular picture book off the bookshelf. But it is a special book all the same. It is one they colored or wrote in, as well as one they can work on reading. That’s big stuff.
Because of my love mini books, I’m offering up a new free mini book today that is perfect for this time of year! You can grab this free printable My Little Book of Fall Colors Mini Book.

My Little Book of Fall Colors Mini Book Free Printable for Kids
This printable book for kids focuses on color recognition, following directions, and reading skills. The nine page mini book has great pictures for coloring or painting, as kids follow the directions on the page to know what colors to use.
There are lots of ways for kids to be creative with this mini book, so don’t worry that they have to just read the page and color which color they are told.
Some ways to make it more creative:
- Give the option of painting the pictures instead of coloring with crayons. Yes, it adds more mess and a little more prep work, but painting mixes things up a bit.
- Not everything on the page has to be colored based on the directions. For example, on the page that says that the rake is green, there is also a tree on the page that is perfect for coloring in lots of fall colors.
- The cover and final page both allow for a lot of creative color choices. There are no directions for colors on either of these.
- Kids can use multiple shades of the same color. The rake they color in doesn’t have to be just one shade of green. Maybe the handle is dark green and the tines could be a lighter green.
What’s included in the Fall Colors Mini Book Printable?
The free printable packet is a seven page download. It includes:
- Packet cover
- Terms of use and directions page
- My Fall Mini Book (five full sheet pages to make a nine page mini book)
Each page of the mini book features a picture that can be colored based on the text on the page. For example, the first page has the text, “The pumpkin is orange.”
Of course, kids can be encouraged that doesn’t mean the entire pumpkin needs to be orange. What color is the stem usually? What about a leaf leftover from the vine?
The text on each page is predictable because of the repetitive nature of the booklet. This is good for pre-readers and those learning to read.
Pictures to be colored included in the booklet:
- Wagon with pumpkins
- Pumpkin
- Squirrel and acorns
- Hay bale
- Wagon
- Bird with a flower
- Apples in a bushel basket
- Rake and tree
- Leaves
How to Assemble Your Mini Book
1. Print out your booklet pages. These are pages 3 – 7 of the downloadable packet.
2. Cut out pages on all of the outside lines. The outside lines are the darker lines on the page.
3. Have students color all of the pictures according to the text on each page. The cover and the final page can be colored any colors the student desires.
4. Assemble the pages with the cover on top and the leaves page at the bottom. The pages are not numbered, so the order for the rest of the pages is not important. However, if you plan to read it as a class, then make sure that all of the pages are in the same order for all students.
5. Staple the booklet together on the left side of the page where a spine for the book is indicated on the pages.

I love this idea from Projects for Kids for painting beautiful fall trees using cotton balls and clothespins.
I really love the look of painted acorns! Here are directions on how to paint your own acorns. There is also a very handy tip to make sure that you don’t have a bunch of small insects on your acorns. If you don’t want to paint real acorns, here are these cool wooden acorns.
Make some apple-scented playdough! Kids will love helping to make this playdough and then playing with it afterward. There are directions for making apple playdough, green apple playdough, pumpkin playdough, and cinnamon playdough.

My kids and I love this little book! They enjoy making their own book. Do you have other little books available on your site?

I’m not sure that I’ve been good about tagging all of the posts with mini books with a “mini books” tag, but this should at least turn some of them up for you: https://www.reallifeathome.com/tag/mini-books/
I’m so glad that you’re enjoying them! 🙂
