My Little Book of Holiday Colors Mini Book Post Preview: Children can work on color recognition, simple reading, and following directions with this free Christmas colors mini book. Kids will color pictures based on the sentences in this Christmas colors mini book.
As I have mentioned before, when I taught a preschool class in our homeschool co-op as well as when I taught kindergarten in the classroom, I loved making mini books with kids. The kids really seemed to enjoy making their own books that they got to decorate and read over and over.
Sure, it’s not like a regular picture book off the bookshelf. However, it is a special book for them. It is one they colored or wrote in, as well as one they can work on reading. That’s big stuff for little ones.
Because of my love mini books, I’m offering up a new free mini book today that is wonderful for this time of year! Even better, you can grab this printable My Little Book of Holiday Colors Mini Book for free.

My Little Book of Christmas Colors Mini Book Printable
This printable mini book for kids has a focus on following directions, color recognition, and simple repetitive reading. The 11-page booklet has fun pictures for kids to color or paint, as they follow along with the directions on the page to know what colors to use.
Don’t worry that this will be boring and that kids will just read the page and color which color they are told. There are actually lots of ways for kids to be creative with this Christmas mini book beyond grabbing a box of crayons and working on it. (Though, honestly – I think crayons are pretty fun too.)
Some options beyond simply coloring each page with crayons in one color:
Give children the option of painting the pictures instead of coloring with crayons.
Yes, it will add more mess and a little more prep work, but painting mixes things up a bit. Plus it uses their fine motor skills in a different way.
There are also other ideas for art supplies to use here.
Not everything on the page has to be colored based on the directions.
For example, on the page for white, it only mentions that the marshmallow is white. There is also a mug of hot chocolate on the page, and that can be colored as creatively as children want.
The cover and final page both invite a lot of creative color choices.
There are no directions for colors on either of these. “The stockings are bright” leaves a lot to the imagination!
Remind kids that they can use multiple shades of the same color.
If children are mostly using an eight-count box of crayons, this might be a little more difficult. However, if they have access to a lot of shades of the same colors, they can get a little more creative in what each color means.
For example, the gift they color in doesn’t have to be just one shade of blue just because the gift is blue. Maybe the ribbon is dark blue and the wrapping paper could be a lighter blue.
What’s included in the Christmas Colors Mini Book Printable?
The free printable packet is an eight page download. It includes:
- Packet cover
- Terms of use and directions page
- My Holiday Mini Book – this includes six full sheet pages to make an 11 page mini book
Each page of the mini book features a picture that kids will color based on the text on the page. For example, one page has the text, “The sleigh is red.”
Of course, you may encourage kids that this doesn’t mean the entire sleigh needs to be red. The bottom of the sleigh might likely be silver, gray, or brown.
The text on each page is predictable because of the repetitive nature of the booklet. This is good for pre-readers and those learning to read individual words and sentences.
Pictures included in the booklet:
- Christmas ornaments in a row (on the cover)
- Star
- Gift
- Mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows
- Sleigh
- Ornament
- Christmas lights
- Candy
- Gingerbread man with a mug of hot chocolate next to him
- Christmas tree with presents under it
- Christmas stockings
How to Assemble Your Mini Book
1. Print out your booklet pages. These are pages 3 – 8 of the packet that you will download.
2. Cut out pages on all of the outside lines. The outside lines are the darker lines on the page.
3. Have students color all of the pictures according to the text on each page. As already discussed, both the cover and the final page can be colored any colors the student desires.
4. Assemble the pages with the cover on top and the stockings page at the bottom. The individual pages are not numbered, so the order for the rest of the pages is not important. However, if you plan to read the story as a class, then make sure that all of the pages are in the same order for all students.
5. Staple the booklet together on the left side of the page where a spine for the book is indicated on the pages.
Christmas Extension Activities
You can keep scrolling to get to the My Holiday Colors Mini Book, if you’d like. However, if you’d like some ideas for other Christmas activities, you might like some of these!
If your students love to color, they might also love these free printable Christmas bookmarks featuring animals, gifts, and more.
I love this idea from Buggy and Buddy for painting these beautiful marbled Christmas trees.
I don’t know what it is about wooden shapes, but in my experience, kids love to color or paint on them. A set of Christmas ornaments that they are free to decorate how they wish is such a fun and creativity activity for kids! Here are some cool wooden ornaments in lots of different designs.
While some of these designs may be a bit much for younger kids, this set of 15 Christmas coloring pages may be really enjoyable to some children. They may enjoy it more if they feel like it’s okay to not color in every single space a different color. For this, it’s okay to color over lines and color large areas the same.
