Sweet and Easy Glazed Orange Bread Recipe Post Preview: Your family will love this quick and easy orange bread that features a sweet glaze and orange zest.

Not only do I love recipes with orange zest in them, but I also love zesting oranges. I love the way it smells while zesting. It reminds me of the old version of the Soarin’ Ride at Disney World when you go over the orange groves. So fresh and calming.

That’s how I feel about recipes with orange zest in them too, like this Orange Buttercream Frosting recipe or these Orange Cardamom Cookies. I love the fresh component that adds some zing. (If you can’t zest an orange, here is orange peel you can purchase.)

Today, I have a quick and easy Glazed Orange Bread recipe. This recipe includes orange zest along with a sweet glaze and icing. This is an excellent sweet bread to have for dessert or a sweet snack.

Quick and Easy Glazed Orange Bread Recipe – Ingredients

Ingredients for Orange Bread

  • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour (Important Note: I have a recipe for easily making your own self-rising flour farther down in the post, so if you only have all-purpose flour, you can still make this recipe)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp orange zest (here are some orange zesters)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

orange zester

Ingredients for Orange Syrup

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (you can use either freshly squeezed orange juice or purchased orange juice both times the recipe calls for orange juice)

Manual Citrus Juicer

Ingredients for Orange Icing Glaze

  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp orange extract

How to Make Self-Rising Flour

While the Easy Orange Bread recipe calls for self-rising flour, you can still make it even if you don’t have self-rising flour on hand. That’s because you can make your own self-rising flour with all-purpose flour, which you might more typically have on hand.

To make your own self-rising flour, just combine one cup of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. If you need more, like you will need for this recipe, you will just follow the same ratios but in a larger quantity.

When you combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt, be sure to whisk it all together with a whisk or fork in order to fully combine the ingredients.

For this orange bread recipe, I would recommend just doubling each amount to make self-rising flour and just plan to have some leftover self-rising flour.

Okay, let’s get back to the orange bread now that you’re prepared to make your own self-rising flour if needed.

Directions for Making the Orange Bread Batter

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

I recommend using an oven thermometer to make sure that your oven is the correct temperature. Mine, for instance, always tells me it is ready way before it actually is. So, I rely on my oven thermometer.

2. Prepare a 9-inch by 5-inch loaf pan with a non-stick spray.

3. In a large bowl, combine the sour cream, granulated sugar, eggs, orange zest, vanilla extract, and oil. Stir until well blended.

4. Add the self-rising flour to your batter. Mix this until well combined.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

6. Set aside to cool.

Directions for Orange Syrup (to top Orange Bread)

You will prepare the orange syrup after the bread has cooled (at least 30 minutes).

1. Add the 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of orange juice to a saucepan and stir together.

2. Heat the mixture until it boils. Allow the mixture to boil for a minute or two until the sugar is dissolved. Then, remove the pan from heat.

3. Remove the orange bread from its pan and place it onto a cooling rack. Place wax paper underneath the cooling rack. Pour the orange syrup all over the top of the bread and let it soak in.

Directions for the Orange Icing Glaze

1. Once your bread has completely cooled again, mix together the orange juice, powdered sugar, and orange extract until well combined, making a glaze.

2. Drizzle the icing all over the top of the bread.

Slice and enjoy!

YOU MENTIONED HOW TO MAKE SELF-RISING FLOUR, IN FIRST PARAGRAPH YOU SAID TO USE 1 1/2 TSP. BAKING POWDER, 1/4 TSP SALT. SECOND PARAGRAPH YOU SAID TO COMBINE FLOUR AND BAKING SODA AND SALT AND BLEND WELL, I AM ASSUMING YOU MEANT BAKING POWDER IN SECOND PARAGRAPH. JUST NEED TO KNOW WHICH IS RIGHT. THANK YOU

Thanks for catching that, Elaine! It’s baking powder. I corrected it the second time I wrote it now.
