Donuts just might be one of the tastiest sweets. Yeah, I know – some people think of donuts as a breakfast item. I have never been able to eat them instead of breakfast. But they are pretty amazing as a dessert or special treat.

I love that the recipe that I’m going to share today is not just a recipe, but an activity. This recipe is definitely something that you can work on with your kids as a fun holiday activity. 

Today, I’m sharing a recipe and directions that you can use to make your own easy homemade donuts as well as how to decorate them to make donut wreaths!

Donut Wreath Recipe: Easy Baked Homemade Donuts for Christmas

The donut wreath easy homemade donuts are perfect for having at home during the holidays, taking in for a holiday class party, or even for bake sales. Each batch makes approximately 15 mini donuts.

If you want to use premade cake donuts: you can skip all of the directions for making the donuts and just follow the directions for making frosting and decorating the donut wreaths.

How to Make an Advent Donut Wreath

If you want to make a treat for Advent, these easy homemade mini donuts can be perfect for that!

Just follow the recipe and directions below. After you have added the green icing to make your wreath, you can decide whether or not you want to add the red nonpareils. You’ll add three small dollops of purple icing and one small dollop of pink icing to represent the Advent candles.

Ingredients for Easy Homemade Baked Donuts

Donut Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • ½ cup milk

Note: You will also need a mini donut pan. These are not expensive and are a fun thing to have at home. If you prefer, you could buy a mini donut maker.


Frosting Ingredients

  • ½ stick salted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Green food coloring gel
  • Red nonpareils (for decorating on top of the frosting)

Donut Wreaths Directions

Directions for Easy Homemade Baked Donuts

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Add dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.

3. Add remaining ingredients and whisk together.

4. Pour the batter into a mini donut pan sprayed with non-stick spray.

To do this, you can either scoop the batter with a small spoon and put it in the donut cavities in the pan or squeeze from a plastic sandwich bag, piping bag, or a squeeze bottle.

5. Bake for approximately 10 minutes.

6. Allow the donuts to cool for a few minutes. Then take them out of the pan and move them to a cooling rack.

Directions for Your Donut Wreath Frosting

1. Using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the butter on medium.

2. Once the butter is creamy, add your almond extract.

3. Add powdered sugar, a little at a time. Mix well.

4. Add milk a little at a time, until your desired consistency is reached.

5. Add food coloring, a little at a time, until you have reached the desired color. (I recommend Wilton gel food coloring.)

How to Make Your Homemade Donuts into Donut Wreaths

1. Use a pastry bag with a decorative frosting tip to pipe your green frosting onto your homemade donuts.
