How to Make a Snack Station for Your Family

If your family is anything like my family, people tend to look for snacks by digging around the refrigerator and pantry and then end up picking out something easy to grab and go. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always lead to the best choices. If this sounds like your family too, a snack station may be a perfect solution for encouraging better snack choices.

(Be sure to get all the way to the bottom of this post to enter for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card!)

How to Make a Snack Station for Your Family {How to Make It, Ideas for Contents, and Where to Store It}

advertisement

A snack station doesn’t have to be just for times like after school snacks. We find that it’s also a great spot for quick, to-go snack options for times like the drive to or from dance class for Molly or for Jack to pick out some things to take with him for the long hours at rehearsal for the school’s spring musical.

I’m especially glad that Jack has these quick and easy options, because not only is he kind of lazy about finding things to eat, but he also tends to get migraine headaches when he doesn’t eat enough. That’s not a great combination. This way, he has an easy way to grab lots of snack options that will keep him going that are choices that feature fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and protein.

How to Make a Snack Station for Your Family

While I encourage you to set up a snack station that works best for your family, we used two plastic shoe box-size containers. We pack up one with things are shelf stable, which we keep in the pantry and the other with items that need to be cold, which we keep in the refrigerator.

For the most part, with some exceptions, I like for the snacks in our snack stations to either be a fruit, a vegetable, contain some whole grains, have a decent amount of protein, or have some healthy fats. These are all things that we are trying to add to our diets in greater quantities.

Snack Stations for Your Family

In our refrigerator snack station, we keep things like already cleaned and prepped fresh fruits and vegetables, string cheese, single serving guacamole, no sugar added fruit cups, and applesauce. In our pantry snack station, some items we keep are pretzel sticks, popcorn, pistachios, single serving SKIPPY® Peanut Butter containers (great for pairing up celery from the refrigerator snack station!), and SKIPPY® P.B. Bites (our favorite ones are the Pretzel flavor!).

I encourage the kids to find snacks from the snack stations for snacking on the go, snacking here at home, and even for throwing into a lunch bag as part of their school lunch. If they are grabbing a fruit or vegetable, then they also might grab a dip, such as a snack of peanut butter and celery or maybe carrots and guacamole.

With all of this talk about kids and their activities, however, it can be easy to think of a snack station as a kid only resource. That’s silly, of course. It also makes a great solution for finding snacks for adults too!

Our Latest Addition to the Snack Station

I know that I mentioned them above, but we have really been loving the new SKIPPY® P.B. Bites that we recently added to the pantry snack station. The first time that I let everyone try them after opening the resealable container, which I love for keeping them fresh and easy to take on the go, everyone grabbed one with some hesitation.  After everyone ate that first one, there were all kinds of hands going back in for more.

SKIPPY® Yippee™!

Jack quickly said, “I wouldn’t mind if you bought these all the time, Mom,” while grabbing for yet another one. I liked his subtlety there.

While I know that the thought of a peanut butter snack as a portable snack may sound crazy, but the SKIPPY® P.B. Bites are perfect for at home, in the car, or on-the-go. Not only is the container perfectly sized for popping into a car drink holder and features that resealable lid that I mentioned, but the SKIPPY® P.B. Bites are made with peanut butter but aren’t sticky or messy. Plus, the SKIPPY® P.B. Pretzel Bites feature 5 grams of protein per serving. Score!

As you can see from Molly here, they really aren’t messy or sticky. She can even enjoy them while working on homework!

Study Time Snacking with SKIPPY® P.B. Bites

If you are interested in a fun, tasty peanut butter treat, you can find the SKIPPY® P.B. Bites in the peanut butter aisle. So, the next time you’re at the store, you could grab these great, portable peanut butter snacks for the whole family to enjoy on-the-go or to eat in the comfort of your own home. SKIPPY YIPPEE®!

I think these would go great with crackers, grapes, dried cranberries, raisins, and basically any berry that you would find in the jelly aisle at the store.
