What are some of your best homeschool field trip ideas? We’ve had some really fun field trips in our years of homeschooling. The very first field trip we ever went on was on our very first homeschool day ever. We went to visit the downtown area of the little town in which we live. It was really neat to wander around and learn some of the local history that we’d never taken the time to investigate.

Some of our other favorites have been:

  • Two local TV stations
  • A radio station
  • Fire Department
  • A demonstration by two police officers of their K-9’s
  • Dairy Farm
  • An apple orchard
  • Coca-Cola bottling plant
  • Post Office
  • Train museum
  • The local History Museum
  • Hospital
  • Newpaper printing facility
  • Spanish Quarter in St. Augustine (yeah that was one of those really cool, extended field trips)

Most businesses are willing to arrange field trips, if you just call and ask. A wonderful resource for planning official field trips and for even turning everyday outings into a learning opportunity is The A to Z Guide to Home School Field Trips by Gregg Harris. It offers suggestions of places to visit, ideas of questions to ask and tips for wrapping up the field trip at home.

What field trips have you and your family enjoyed together?

My favorite field trip was going to Fair Oaks Farm, a dairy farm in Northwest Indiana. Not only did we learn all about milk production and get to eat homemade ice cream, but we saw a baby cow being born!

I really liked when we went to Dinosaur World on our way home from another state. I blogged about it at the link for my name.

Our best yet was a trip to our state's capital for a homeschool rally!

Oh, I bet that was really cool watching the calf being born. My grandfather had a cow when I was young and I got to watch it give birth once. It was all really cool and fascinating…until the after birth! Ewwww!!

LMarci — we've been to Fair Oaks Farm too! It was really neat!

Kris — I think my favorite "field trip" we took last year has to be our 7 day trip to Florida during the winter. We had so many amazing learning experiences. It was just great.
