I’ve heard debate about whether or not kids need to learn cursive writing nowadays. (My opinion: Yes, they do!) Regardless of reasons on either side of that argument, there’s really no question that kids these days absolutely need to learn how to type! Thankfully, there are many great FREE online typing games for kids of all ages. Here are a few of our favorites:

BBC Dance Mat Typing
My 12 year old first used this one a few years ago and still loves it! With characters like a belly-dancing hippo or an opera-singing octopus to help you learn, it’s entertaining but also really helped my daughter in her typing.

Fun to Type
Games with names like “Keyboard Ninja” and “Baron Von Typesfast.” Fun!

Learning Games for Kids
Cool typing games like “QWERTY Warriors” and “Typing Monsters.” Kids can even take a typing speed test which will check for keyboarding accuracy as well.

Free Training Tutorial
This site has games like “Air Typer,” an arcade style game in which you fly an airplane, and “Typing Asteroids,” to practice whole and sometimes complex words.

Big Brown Bear
On this site, you’ll find basic keyboard practice, as well as games to help kids learn to type.

ABCya
Keyboarding activities for elementary age students. Students must type the letters above the critters as they fall from the sky.

Super Hyper Spider Typer
This game features hungry lizards with words on their backs trying to get Berry the hairy spider! (Bonus: it’s fun to say Super-Hyper-Spider-Typer!)

Jamie is a wife, mama, home educator, and shutterbug who never ventures far from a steaming hot mug of tea. Her kid range in age from preschool to adult, which means there’s rarely a dull (or quiet!) moment in her home. Also find her on twitter or facebook.
