Do you ever do something that makes perfect sense to you only to have someone else think that it’s odd?
I suppose I should have had a clue that my egg arranging was not necessarily the norm when I had to coach Eric about what pattern to use eggs in the carton. You see, I’m all about there being a nice even weight distribution in the egg carton. So, if I have to grab out two eggs, I’ll grab out one from somewhere in the carton, but then the second one needs to come from the opposite side of the carton from whichever spot will balance out the other empty spot.
I suspect I need diagrams here, huh? Sorry — I don’t have them.
When one of my sisters was using eggs at my house, I later got out the carton and then said, “You used some eggs, didn’t you?” She asked how I knew, and I said it was because the eggs were out of order. She laughed at me, and later had to tell some people about what a crazy thing I did with the eggs. I was relieved when at least a couple of other people said they do the same thing.
With holiday baking coming up this week, I think I’m going to be doing a lot of egg re-arranging. (Oh, and then a little bit of annoyance each time I can’t balance it out exactly.)
Do you have any kitchen quirks that you don’t actually think are all that quirky?

That makes perfect sense to me! I have egg trays built into the door of my fridge, though, so I don't have to worry about balancing cartons.

I do the same thing with my eggs! At least I'm not alone in the world. 🙂

Oh, oh, another egg arranger here! I think it is easier to carry the carton when it is balanced. That's why I do it.

I totally agree! 🙂 I wouldn't want to pull the carton out of the fridge and find that they are unbalanced and then drop them.

This post makes me feel so much more normal! My husband does not understand why it matters how the weight is distributed when eggs aren't very heavy. Oh well!! Thanks for sharing!

Wow — who knew there was a secret society of egg arrangers?

Being said sister in your home that day, I thought I had to comment on this blog posting.
You know when you have absolutely NO CLUE about something, until someone is gracious enough to come and show you the way? Well, that is what you did for me Angie. Thanks to you, I too, am now an obssessive egg arranger! Ha!

People! The eggs must be used in a neat, orderly fashion! You can't just have random empty spot! Just say NO to Egg Anarchy!

I'm also one of those egg arrangers!! I do the same thing and it makes perfect sense to me – I cant remember the last time Jason got an egg out – he doesn't bake and he eats egg beaters so I am the only one who knows my little secret!

This is exactly what I do, but I thought it was just me. I once nearly dropped a carton when it was improperly loaded. Ha! I also rearrange my sandwiches so they are symmetrical- I need to have something in every bite- no sense in all lettuce one bite and then all cheese the next! Thanks for a real laugh.
Amy @ Finer Things says
I do that, too!

This is so funny! I've never heard of such a thing.
Believe it or not, eggs in China don't come in cartons. They are put into plastic bags, weighed, and taken home just like that. (Yes, they tend to get broken until you get more experienced at being a careful egg carrier.)
But my refrigerator has a section in the door to store eggs. I am sort of picky about "rotating stock" for my eggs. If I buy more before the previous ones are used, I like to put the old ones toward the front so I'll use them first.
I like to have my frequently used baking goods ON the counter if possible. So I like canisters with flour, sugar, salt, etc. Fortunately my current kitchen has a long windowsill that I use for this purpose. LOVE it!
