We love to eat fresh vegetables and herbs right out of our garden. We are currently working with four rectangular planted boxes to grow a delicious pizza garden.  We first filled the planters with a hearty mix of compost and garden soil and each family member got to choose a favorite topping to grow.

Planter 1: 2 cherry tomatos, 2 roma tomato

Planter 2: white onions, yellow onions, Italian red onions, garlic (plant now to harvest in the Fall)

Planter 3: 2 bell peppers, 1 hot peppers, parsley

Planter 4: Basil (perfect for making pesto), oregano

All of these ingredients can be planted in the same garden plot, except for oregano. Oregano, like mint, will spread so it’s best to plant those herbs in a separate planter.  After the garden is planted be sure to keep it well hydrated.

Now all you need to do is make the dough, add your sauce, and cheese. Here is an old recipe that we follow.

Pizza Dough Recipe:

  • 1 package of active dry yeast- (dissolve yeast in water and let sit 10 minutes)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups bread flower
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar

1. Mix wet ingredients with dry and mix until dough is formed.

2. Cover and rise until is has doubled in size (about 30 minutes).

3. Form dough on a floured surface, add pizza ingredients.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for about 20 minutes.

What do you like to grow in your home garden?  Do you have any favorite recipes with your fresh produce?

Karen enjoys getting her hands dirty with her two little helpers by her side.  Many times they end up eating baby vegetables because patience, like vegetables, is something that grows with time!

I love your idea of a pizza garden! That adds a whole new dimension to gardening – and what a fun activity when the ingredients are harvested! 🙂

I’ve planted pizza gardens before when I was still a classroom teacher, and even for a group of 25 third graders, it’s a lot of fun!
