I’ll be the first to admit it: We’re kind of a nerdy, techy family. Left to our own devices, well, we’ll probably each find our own devices and waste away hours like that. While this is fine in moderation, it’s not only not as healthy for our bodies, but it’s also not as healthy for our family bonds. That’s why we’ve found a perfect solution for more intentional family time through outdoor activities.
Our Favorite Outdoor Family Activities: Hikes and Bike Riding
In an effort to work on our sluggishness while increasing family time, we wanted to find some physical activities to do as a family that everyone could enjoy. We were surprised when we found not one but several, especially when we have a household that includes some sports challenged kids, along with one hard working ballerina.
Two of our favorites include going out on bike rides and going on trails (especially while we’re camping). We love that they offer us a great chance for physical activity, time where we are focused on each other, and they generally require minimal time to get ready (since we aren’t really to the point where we could go for hours on end).
I like that getting ready usually just involves grabbing some good shoes, minimal equipment, and some snacks and drinks – things like lots of water and Capri Sun
What is it about those pouches? I still remember how cool I thought Capri Sun Juice drinks were when I was a kid, especially at one sleepover when we kept re-inflating the pouches by blowing in them to try to convince my friend’s Mom that we weren’t ready for bed yet because we were still working on our drinks.
Okay, back to my kids’ childhood memories and not my own.
Our times of bike riding and hiking are times that I really treasure with my family, and from how the kids talk about them, I think that they have become a treasured time to them too. I especially love the times when take a break during our activity for our snacks and drinks, as it gives us a chance to relax and visit away from other distractions.

- Sports that can be played in small groups (or just sports skills such as free throws with a basketball or catch with a baseball)
