Multiplying and Dividing Fractions { Joie de Vivre no. 2 }

a joy of living: multiplying and dividing fractions

I love Noah, but sitting with him while he works on math can be painful.  I don’t know if it’s the Autism, the ADHD, or just a lack of ever really internalizing all of those basic math facts that a person should, but it takes him a long time to do math.  To his credit, he scores well in the end, but it takes a long time.

Our most frequent math nemesis for a while now has been making denominators all the same during adding and subtracting of fractions.  He does it well, but it takes a long time.

But then suddenly, we have the sweetness of multiplying and dividing fractions.

Different denominators?  No problem.  After weeks of watching the tedious process of finding like denominators, it almost feels decadent.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the loveliness of when cross reducing is possible.

Sure, it may all sound nerdy, but in this season of my life, multiplying and dividing fractions has become a joyful thing.

What is one of your joys this week?

    I have always loved fractions. :) Brings back memories from my childhood of mom and I sitting at the table doing my math work. You are making memories.

    I am useless at math but thankfully have a husband who’s a whiz at it. Although our son is in public school, he routinely comes home with math homework and fortunately my husband can help him out. But school also brought one of my joys this week: my son, who’ll turn 13 in March, asked me to take him shopping for a special Valentine’s Day card and some candy for his first-ever crush. It’s so sweet, seeing how my little man is learning to be a gentleman!
